Funding for this prize has been donated by friends of the late Christopher Holmes, a student in the Faculty of Science at the University of Tasmania, who died in an accident during a geological collecting trip in 1968.

Awarded to the student enrolled in third year Earth Science who, in the opinion of the Head of Earth Sciences, has been most successful in the mineralogy component of a third year unit (both theoretical and practical) and who has not previously presented for examination in the unit.
