This prize was founded by the Department of English in the University of Tasmania from sums raised from the sales of Poems in Honour of James McAuley, published by the New Albion Press, in memory of James McAuley, Professor of English in the University from 1961 until his death in October 1976.

Awarded to the most outstanding student in English Honours (level 400), with First Class Honours.
