Margaret Young Memorial Chinese Language Prize (HMC220)

This prize was established by the Margaret Young Memorial Group to honour Margaret Young and to encourage the study and appreciation of Chinese language and culture. Margaret was a Tai Chi teacher in Launceston for many years and was a skilled and inspirational teacher who often took classes in Launceston City parks and led her students in demonstrations of Tai Chi at community events. She was helpful and welcoming to all she met and sought to encourage balance and harmony in our community. She encouraged her students to learn from other cultures and China was a learning source for her. She was killed in a car accident returning from a Tai Chi class. Her students formed a group to continue doing Tai Chi together and to raise funds to honour her memory and contribute to the community as she had done. The Group, assisted by the Launceston City Council, built a Memorial to her in Ockerby Gardens and has published information about Margaret, donated annually to local charitable organizations and gives these prizes for study of Chinese language and culture.
